Respondus LockDown Browser™ is a customized browser that increases the security of exam delivery in D2L. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser to access an exam, they are unable to print, copy, navigate to websites, or access other applications. Once a quiz is started, students are locked into the quiz until it’s submitted for grading or an "early exit" is executed by the student. For a complete list of features, visit the Respondus web site.
Respondus LockDown Browser installs a separate program that displays a custom browser when it is started. Respondus LockDown Browser is not intended to replace the browser used by faculty or students within D2L. Respondus LockDown Browser is only intended for use by students while taking quizzes that have been prepared for use with Respondus LockDown Browser.
Preparing a Quiz for use with Respondus LockDown BrowserTo require that students use Respondus LockDown Browser to access a D2L quiz, two things must occur:
- The instructor must set the quiz to require the Respondus LockDown Browser.
- The student’s computer must have Respondus LockDown Browser installed. All KU campus lab computers have an update-to-date version of Respondus LockDown Browser installed.
Follow these steps to enable the “Require Respondus LockDown Browser” setting for a quiz. This article assumes that the quiz has already been created in D2L. For more information on creating a quiz, see the Quizzes area of the Soultions Center.
Using a standard web browser, log into D2L as an instructor.
Select "Assessments" > "Quizzes."
Choose "Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam" and indicate whether the browser is also required for viewing quiz feedback and results. If desired, enter a password to access the exam. If set, students will need to enter this password before they are able to begin the quiz.
Advanced Settings: Select the advanced settings that you wish to apply to the quiz.
We do NOT recommend selecting this setting outside of a proctored environment. When this option is not selected, a student is able to exit the browser if their Internet connection fails or there is an emergency. A student will be warned twice before being able to close the browser and will also be prompted to provide a reason for their "early exit."
Allow students to take the exam using an iPad (using the LockDown Browser app from iTunes) - More information on the Repondus LockDown Browser mobile app is available at the Respondus website.
Allow specific students to access this exam with screen readers (e.g. JAWS, Window-Eyes) - More information on the accessibility features of the Respondus LockDown Browser is available at the Respondus website.
Enable Calculator on the toolbar - A standard or scientific calculator can be enabled for students to access on the browser's toolbar.
Enable Printing from the toolbar - A print button can be enabled on the browser's toolbar to allow the exam screen to be printed.
Be sure to click "Save and Close" to apply the options to the quiz.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All quizzes that are setup to use the Respondus LockDown Browser will have the original quiz name appended with '- requires Respondus LockDown Browser.' This text is required for the integration to work properly. Removing this text from the quiz name will break the quiz. Please leave the '- requires Respondus LockDown Browser' in the quiz name.
Respondus LockDown Browser and Copied Quizzes
After copying quizzes (individually or as part of a course copy) that are set to use the LockDown Brwoser, you must navigate to the Quiz area and open the LockDown Browser Dashboard (tab) to activate the dashboard for your course and the copied quizzes. It's important to complete this process immediately after a course copy. Students should not attempt to take exams until this step has been completed.
Quizzes that were setup prior to the launch of the new dashboard interface will show an error message and will require a additional step. To update the quizzes for the new interface, click the 'Fix it' button next to each quiz.
This will add the amendment necessary for the integration to the quiz title and update the Respondus LockDown Browser status to 'Required.'
Additional Tips and Suggestions
It's recommended that you ensure students know, well in advance, that they must use Respondus LockDown Browser to take an online quiz. This is particularly important if students are required to install Respondus LockDown Browser to their own computer. Consider creating a “practice quiz” that requires the use of Respondus LockDown Browser so students can complete the initial setup in a low-stakes environment.
Once a D2L quiz is started with Respondus LockDown Browser, the quiz will appear in a full-screen window and all other applications and links are locked down. The quiz cannot be exited without clicking the “Finish” button.
If audio/video files are used in a quiz, the media player must be embedded in the question itself. This is the only way that students will have access to the control buttons, such as play, start, pause and stop.
Respondus LockDown Browser will maintain the “locked” testing environment even if a question contains a link to another web page (which opens another, secure browser window). However, all links that may appear on the new web page will be blocked by the browser, so be sure the content that students must see is available from the initial, linked page.
Reviewing Early Exits
There may be times when a student needs to exit an exam after it has been started (internet connection problems, unavoidable circumstances, etc.). If the exam is not set to "lock until quiz submission," students will be able to execute an early exit. Students will be warned twice before exiting the browser. They will also be prompted to enter a reason for their early exit. You can review any early exits and the reasons by returning to the "LockDown Browser" tab in the quizzes area and choosing "Review Early Exists."
Working with Students
Since instructors are generally the first line of support for students who encounter problems, it’s important to understand how Respondus LockDown Browser will work for students.
Student Quick Start Guide
A Student Guide for Respondus LockDown Browser is available. This guide walks students through the use and setup of the LockDown Browser.
Installation of Respondus LockDown Browser
To avoid last-minute problems, it’s strongly recommended that Respondus LockDown Browser be installed and tested well before students are expected to use it for an exam. If students need to install Respondus LockDown Browser on their own computers, we suggest creating a sample quiz to confirm students have successfully installed the Respondus LockDown Browser and understand how to use it for taking a quiz.
For installation instructions, see the Respondus LockDown Student Guide.
