D2L is KU’s learning management system (LMS) and is used to easily deliver course content for all types of classes - whether face-to-face, hybrid, or online - from any computer with an internet connection. D2L supports most web browsers but the most recent versions of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome work will work best.

Please review the following information to help you get started in D2L. For additional orientation on each tool, check out the Tools Orientation section. For troubleshooting and advanced topics, check out the Help Articles section. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, you can try typing a few key words in the search area:

If you have a question about D2L or experience an issue, you can contact the IT Help Center, Monday through Friday 8am-4:30pm (8am-4pm during Summer Session). For any questions related to course content, assignments, and deadlines, please contact your professor.

You can use the links in the below Table of Contents to learn more about a specific tool in D2L. If this is the first time you're using D2L, we recommend viewing all topics on this page in order.

Finding Your Course

Your currently available courses will be displayed in the My Courses widget on your D2L homepage. You can toggle between the semester tabs in the widget to quickly find your courses. To access a course, simply click on the course tile.

Professors control when a course becomes visible to you in D2L. If you aren't seeing your course yet, please check with your professor.

D2L Navigation Menu

The course navigation menu provides links to the various tools in D2L.

Course Content

The Content area of D2L is where your professors will post course materials such as the syllabus, lecture notes, and assigned readings. To access content, click Content in the course navigation menu.

In the Content area, you'll find a Table of Contents and Module list on the left side of the screen. Clicking on a module will open the module to the right where you can select the topic you want to view.

Discussions

D2L Discussions are found under the Communications menu item, and allow for a virtual discussion where participants can share thoughts about course materials, respond to professor prompts, ask questions, share files, or work together with peers. Participants can post new messages, as well as read and reply to messages posted by others.

Discussions are organized by forums and topics. A forum is the overarching folder that houses topics. Within each forum, you will find at least one topic where the actual discussion takes place. Enter a topic to participate in a discussion.

Each new post in a discussion is called a thread. To create a new thread, click “Start a New Thread.” To read and respond to an existing thread, click on the thread subject.

Assignments

The Assignments tool is found under the Assessments menu item, and allows you to submit assignments to your professors electronically through D2L. If your professor is using the Assignment tool to collect assignments, you can simply upload your completed assignment file to the appropriate Assignment folder and your professor will be able to view your submission digitally. See the steps to submit an assignment here.

Quizzes

D2L Quizzes are found under the Assessments menu item, and are used for online assessment. Quizzes can be used for practice assessments, self-assessments, or actual assessments. Be sure you understand your professor's expectations and grading policy before beginning any quiz attempts. Learn more about quizzes here.

Grades

The Grades tool is found under the Assessments menu item, and serves as an electronic grade book for your course. If your professor is using D2L Grades, you can check your grades and feedback on assignments and tests.

Depending on the professor's settings, you may also be able to see your overall grade. Please note: not all professors will use D2L Grades. If you are not seeing your grades in D2L, please contact your professor. Learn more about Grades here.

D2L on Mobile Devices

D2L is fully responsive and can be accessed from the default web browser of your device. We always recommend using a computer with a wired connection for high stakes assessments/quizzes.

Zoom

Zoom is KU's online meeting platform for virtual communication. Often professors will post links to Zoom rooms right inside of D2L. Learn more about Zoom by visiting our IT Solution Center Zoom articles.
